Life is the time spent sifting through mediocre moments in search of those which are extraordinary.

A lot of it will be the camera. I can get away with shooting iso1250 on my 5D with almost no massive quality loss. You won't be able to do that on a Nikon (even the expensive ones don't handle noise well).

Past that, it's also because the two main lenses I use are f1.4. The telephoto I use is f2.8. The faster the lense the better chances you have of getting those kinds of shots, but the small DoF can ruin most of your shots if you're not careful on where you focus.

And you're probably right about the brightness, the place I shoot maintains a very dark lighting situation. That is, compared to the big shows I've been to recently (would've killed to shoot the AFI show I went to... huge bright lights and everyon wearing white).

How do you get such great low-light photos?? I tried bumping up my ISO and opening up my lens, but still can't get a high enough shutter speed to prevent motion blur. The lighting was quite a bit brighter than what you seem to shoot in also. Very frustrating. Of course, I'm on a Nikon D50 and not a Canon 5D too.
